Deborah de Mornay Penny

Deborah de Mornay Penny BA (Hons), PGCE Artist & Teacher

I am an artist and one that loves the natural world. I am at my most content when walking through meadows or along the coastlines of the West Country. I like to paint and draw, it is something that came naturally as a child, was nurtured by my parents, and grew with the inspiration of artists in my family and the learning and skills that I gained through formal studies.

I chose to study art because it was something that I enjoyed and I wished to develop my skills and knowledge further. On reflection, some of the best years of my life were spent at art school, years that not only helped me to develop my skills and knowledge of art but a special time where I experienced the benefits of critique, developed confidence, professionalism and became more self-aware. After completing a foundation course in art and design in Hertfordshire in 1979 I went on to study Graphic Design at Leicester. In 1983 I was awarded a BA (Hons) specialising in book illustration. My additional studies included psychology and the therapeutic benefits of art.

I have always enjoyed learning and are naturally inclined to help and encourage others to learn and achieve their goals in life. It became an obvious next step for me to train to be a teacher and then to undertake further studies about the deeper psychological aspects of how and why we think, learn and do what we do. I continue to learn enhancing and updating my knowledge and skills. I undertook my teacher training in Bristol and was awarded a Post Graduate Certificate in Adult Education in 1998 from the University of Wales, with distinctions in learning theory, curriculum design and professional development. I have taught art within adult education, health and social care settings and privately.

My belief is that we can all paint and draw and that it is never too late to experience the pleasure that it can bring. It is important to me to maintain a good life balance and I find that painting and drawing gives me that. When painting I endeavour to create something that is cheerful and pleasing to the eye.

I offer creative workshops for health, wellbeing and skills development and 1:1 tuition. I paint for pleasure and occasionally exhibit in Somerset.

"Art can offer many things; we can develop skills, produce beautiful items, and communicate what is important to us, our innermost thoughts, ideas and aspirations. We can enjoy the creative journey, the process of self-discovery and so much more."
