An Evening with Guy Mannes-Abbott

An Evening with Guy Mannes-Abbott

Friday January 17th 7-10pm in the Gallery at Contains Art
Talk, meal and a glass of wine for just £10!
All proceeds in support of Contains Art.

Join us for a relaxed, but intimate evening with Guy Mannes-Abbott. Guy is a writer, essayist and critic whose work often appears in visual art contexts, most recently at the Folkestone Triennial.

In the first of our series of talks which explore why artists create the work they make, he will explore his artistic journey and the lands and people that have influenced his work.

His most recent publication, In Ramallah, Running represents Guy's uniquely personal encounter with Palestine, interweaving short, highly condensed poetic texts with longer, exploratory essays, and accompanied by newly commissioned responses from international artists, photographers and prominent writers. Guy will read an excerpt of his text during the event.

“Mannes-Abbott comes at literature from a very different angle, the repetition of acts of obstruction, threat and discomfort serving to communicate the lived experience of containment & oppression... each narrative relates a journey peopled with Israeli soldiers and Palestinian civilians, past concrete occupier settlements and ancient olive groves, haunted by poets and NGOs. Outrage at the limits placed on passage -although way more relaxed for EU citizens that for Palestinians- is a daily refrain in the region, so to set about running, literally, up against these limits is a vividly direct method of critique.”
Sally O'Reilly in Art Monthly

Guy's talk will be followed by a chance to ask questions, and by an informal meal with wine, served in the Contains Art gallery. All proceeds will go towards supporting the not-for-profit venture.

Next up: On March 15th 2014 at 7.00pm, our second speaker, acclaimed photographer Tim Richmond, will explore his own artistic journey and influences, and present his recent work.
