Creative Somerset is the legacy of the Arts Council England Thrive funding initiative, started in 2005 to support organisational development in the county. The project explored the potential for greater shared and collaborative working for arts providers from across Somerset

The Thrive project set out to explore and develop how organisations can:

•    Work collaboratively in new ways
•    Raise the quality and range of arts activity across Somerset
•    Develop an effective strategic role with stakeholders
•    Sustain and increase a diverse audience for the arts

Since the beginnings of the Thrive project the creative sector in Somerset has been through a journey of changing landscapes; both financially and artistically. The formation of a new community interest company was conceived to help transform the disparate elements of what was Somerset Arts Promoters, the Thrive process, the end of the Somerset RFO team, and the demise of the Arts Service at Somerset County Council, into a new, forward-thinking, fit for purpose creative intermediary organisation. One that will act as a catalyst for growth and development providing mechanisms which enable the cultural and creative sector of Somerset to expand and flourish, and maximise its role and value as a major asset to the county.

Creative Somerset was established in 2012 to provide a voice for Somerset’s cultural and creative industry sector. As a not for profit and independent body it is well placed to operate as a real leader for sector development that focuses on the best interests for cultural and creative activities in the County. Creative Somerset aims to become a key partner for stakeholders, a critical friend that supports the sector in becoming a better, more confident and effective resource for Somerset and it’s communities.

After temporary offices at The Brewhouse Theatre and Arts Centre and Superact, Creative Somerset have now settled into a new space within the recently renovated Great Western House owned by Shakspeare Glass and Arts. Situated beside the River Parrett, we are happy to join the many other creative businesses within Langport.
